Labor inspections are underway at the Obrochishte manganese mine in northeast Bulgaria, where a 39-year-old worker died on Tuesday in a rockfall.
Krasimira Spasova, interim director of the Dobrich-based unit of the General Labor Inspectorate Executive Agency, explained Wednesday in an interview for Darik radio that a team of labor inspectors was examining the site of the accident.
She made clear that the inspectors were to establish whether the strengthening of the mine tunnel had been carried out in line with technical requirements.
She said that the Dobrich-based unit of the General Labor Inspectorate Executive Agency would refrain from further comment until the inspections were wrapped up.
The Evromangan AD company, the owner and operator of the mine, has not published their official stance on the case.
Evromangan AD holds a 25-year-old concession for the exploitation of the manganese mine, which is the fourth biggest in the world.
The mine is located 35 km from the Black Sea city and port of Varna and 10 km in-land from the historic coastal town of Balchik.
