Negotiations over the Syria crisis are currently taking place in the Russian capital Moscow.

The talks that are also attended by representatives of the regime in Syria and some opposition leaders will continue until April 9.

The Syrian delegation in Moscow was headed by the country's ambassador to the UN, Bashar Ja'afari.

During the first day of the meetings, the main opposition group remained detached from the topics of discussion - the humanitarian crisis and the reaching of a possible ceasefire deal.

The conflict in the country has been ongoing for more than four years now, with over 220, 000 people killed.

"So much blood has already been spilled in Syria and so many false starts have been made ... that we must not be guided by the fact that someone has declared one opposition group the main one and make this the basis for trying to achieve a result," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated at a news conference following his talks with his counterpart from Madagascar, Reuters reported.

Russia has been among Syrian President Assad's backers during the crisis and government representatives have pledged for a peaceful resolution to the military conflict.

Meanwhile, mourning processions are expected across Moscow Tuesday in honor of the murdered opposition politician Boris Nemtsov.
