Bulgaria: 'Bulgarian SYRIZA' to Seek Running in Local Elections This Year Velizar Enchev (C) alongside other members of his Movement for Radical Change set up the entity on Sunday in the St Nikola monastary in Arbanasi, Veliko Tarnovo. Photo by BGNES

A Bulgarian lawmaker formed on Saturday movement called Bulgarian Spring which is said to be modeled after Greece's far-left SYRIZA party.

Enchev told members and supporters that in 25 years of democracy in Bulgaria, there have been 25 blows to the country which have turned it into the EU's poorest member state.

Velizar Enchev, a former diplomat, intelligence officer and journalist, quit the nationalist Patriotic Front coalition just weeks after entering Parliament to establish his own entity which will gradually take the shape of a party, in his own words.

On Sunday he and a few hundred of his "followers" founded the Movement for Radical Change in Veliko Tarnovo, a city in north-central Bulgaria which was also the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom between the 12th and 14th century.

The civic movement could grow into a party as early as this summer, with at least 500 supporters needed which Enchev is currently seeking to gather.

He has openly declared running in local elections this autumn as a priority.

Enchev earlier drew himself a comparison to SYRIZA explaining the entity will have a social nature and will convey left-wing messages.

His proposals include a 70% tax on personal income exceeding BGN 1 M.
