Russia's food safety watchdog is considering a ban on fruits and vegetables imports from Serbia on suspicions that apples arriving from the country are originally from Poland.

Rosselhoznadzor, cited by Russian news agency RIA Novosti, has voiced its concerns over the sharp increase in apples imports and has demanded consultations with Belgrade over the issue.

Moscow is now threatening that if no explanation is provided by the Serbian authorities in 10 days, import of Serbian fruits might be fully banned in Russia.

Serbia exported 61 000 tons of apples to Russia in July-November 2014, and this is twice the amount exported within the same period of 2014, according to experts quoted by Russian-language websites dealing with agriculture.

Last summer Russia banned imports of food products from the EU and various member states that have imposed sanctions on Russia, as a result of measures approved against Moscow over the Ukraine crisis.
