Italian police detained eight people for trafficking of medicines, which had been stolen from hospitals and pharmacies in the country, which were destined to Bulgaria, Romania and Albania.

The police seized more than 53 000 packaging of medicines, their value amounting to EUR 1.8 M, 24 Chasa daily reports.

Many of the medicines were unusable and even hazardous, as they were not stored at the suitable conditions and temperatures, so all confiscated drugs will be destroyed.

The investigation started in 2014 after police officers uncovered logistic firms in the town of Fiumicino near Rome, which were preparing shipments to the three countries in Eastern Europe.

After a check was carried out, it was revealed that the medicines had been stolen from hospitals in northern Italy.

According to authorities, the organisers of the robberies and the purchasers gathered at auction-like meetings, organised on a yacht in Castellammare di Stabia near Naples.
