More than half a millions Brazilians marched on the streets of 60 cities across the country demanding the impeachment of President Dilma Rouseff.
Among the main reasons behind the demonstration were stated to be the harsh state of local economy, corruption and political conspiration, as reported by The Guardian daily.
The biggest turmoil is said to have been caused by the discovery of a corruption scandal regarding the state owned oil supplier Petrobras.
Despite the fact that Rouseff has been exonerated on the corruption charges, she had been a director to the company at the time of corruption.
According to police stimates, close to 25,000 people marched on the streets of Rio de Janeiro, 40,000 in the country's capital Brasilia and the highest number was registered in Sao Paulo with close to 250,000 demonstrators.
The posters carried by the protesters often read “Brazil does not want and will not be a new Venezuela,” and “Nation + Liberty = PT (Workers Party) Out!”
A number of people also allegedly expressed their support for the former military regime in Brazil that ran between 1964 and 1985.
Eversince then the Working Party has been largely victorious on local elections.
“They are in power for 16 years,'' a protester said Sunday. ''That is like a dictatorship.”
Counter-protests in Rouseff's support were organized Friday and demonstrators there stated that the Workers Party was responsible for defending the interests of the poorer segments of the population.
Rouseff took office for the second term as Brazilian President in October 2014 after securing a close win against center-right candidate Aecio Neves.
