Parliament Debates Non-confidence Motions Today

Politics | November 28, 2002, Thursday // 00:00

The Parliament called off the regular meeting of the MPs with the Cabinet over today's debates on the two non-confidence motions lodged in less than a week by both the right and left opposition. The leftist opposition, the ruling party Simeon II National Movement and its junior partner Movement for Rights and Freedoms pushed through a "merger" of the motions on Wednesday. The only parliamentary bloc to protest against this decision was the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF), initiator of one of the non-confidence motions. UDF reasoned that the left-wingers lodged their motion two days after the right opposition and formulated the text of the possible non-confidence decision differently. Both right and left opposition parties lodged the motions saying the government's promise to close Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant's units three and four in 2006 as required by the EU is in violation of the Bulgarian Parliament's decision on the issue. Recently, the MPs passed a declaration that constitutes the closures only upon the country's accession in the EU.
