Bulgarian schoolgirl suffered a heavy injury after she was hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing in the Italian resort Montecatini Terme on Sunday evening.

The girl, who lives in the town with her parents and attends the local school, is 17 years old, Darik radio reports.

The driver, who was travelling at a high speed in a dark and rainy weather, escaped from the site of the incident.

Witnesses called the emergency medical service and the police and explained that the driver did not even attempt to stop.

The Bulgarian girl was admitted to a local hospital, but so far doctors have abstained from disclosing further information on her condition.
