Kilometer-long queues have formed at the Turkish-Bulgarian border crossing points, with the drivers seeking to cross into Bulgaria.
The congestion at the Turkish border crossing unit formed on Friday afternoon, according to reports of an Istanbul-based correspondent of the Bulgarian National Radio.
According to reports of Turkish border authorities, the queue of TIR trucks at the Kap?kule border crossing point is 11-kilometers long.
The traffic jam forced a number of drivers to head for the Lesovo-Hamzabeili border crossing point, where a 10-kilometer queue formed too.
Turkish authorities explained the congested border crossings with a delay in the work of officials at the Kapitan Andreevo unit.
They said that the processing of vehicles at the Kapitan Andreevo proceded at a slower pace due to the reduced number of border officials due to the holidays in Bulgaria.
An official from the Kap?kule border crossing point argued that the site at the Kapitan Andreevo unit was too small and trucks had to wait on the Turkish side of the border crossing point.
Border authorities said that teams of police officers were patrolling the areas occupied by the vehicles that had queued up at the sites in order to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing the border.
Asked to comment on the matter, Bulgaria’s Border Police unit told news.bg that they had not been informed about queues at these border crossing points.
