Nearly 3,000 Bulgarians Sought Asylum Earlier This Year

A total of 2,737 Bulgarians have applied for asylum in foreign countries earlier this year. The figure was cited at the Fifth Round Table within the framework of the 10 anniversary of the Bulgarian State refugee institution and the opening of UNHCR's Office in Sofia. The purpose of the Fifth Round Table was to measure in- and output of refugee work in the area of refugee reception and integration. During the nine months of 2002 some 2.467 persons applied for refugee status in Bulgaria, mainly from Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, trends in Asylum Applications January - September 2002 as provided by Governments and recorded by UNHCR Geneva indicate. The contribution to the 2002 UNHCR Programs shows that the USA is the top donor with USD 225.707 M (of the total USD 786.069 M). Ten Years of UNHCR's Operational financial support in Bulgaria through governmental and NGO refugee partners from 1993-2002 amounts to about USD 5 M.
