Former Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov announced that he is going to resign his party's leadership due to the decision of ABV's parliamentary group to support the issue of new debt.

The Alternative for Bulgarian Revival (ABV) was initially opposed to the issue of new debt amounting to BGN 16 B, but the party altered its position and voted in favour on Wednesday.

Parvanov explained that this reversal in position happened against his will and assessed it as representing a serious political mistake, he said in an interview for private NOVA TV on Thursday.

The former president apologised to his voters and said that he does not believe in the promises of Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov, who managed to persuade the parliamentary group of ABV.

Goranov promised to make savings worth BGN 2 B, which convinced ABV and other parties, which had initially been against the debt, to vote in favour.

Parvanov said that no reduction of the debt is likely take place and he is to resign at the next national council of his party.

He is not likely to demand from his fellow party member Ivaylo Kalfin to resign his position as Deputy Prime Minister.

Parvanov served as Bulgaria's President from 2002 to 2011.
