A Metrolink train derailed in Oxnard in southern California after colliding with a tractor trailer on Tuesday, leaving at least 30 people injured.

The train, which was destined to Los Angeles, crashed about 100 kilometres before its final destination, the BBC reports.

Four carriages derailed, three of which were equipped with crash energy management systems, which are designed to absorb the shock from the crash.

The Ventura County Fire Department described the crash as “multi-casualty incident”, but could not confirm whether there were any fatalities, The Los Angeles Times.

In 2008 a Metrolink commuter train collided with a Union Pacific freight train in Chatsworth, killing 25 people and injuring others.
