Sam Smith stormed the 57th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last night. The British artist was the big winner at the ceremony, taking home four awards - Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album.
"Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys," Smith said, quoted by the BBC.
Runners up with three awards included Beyonc? (Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song for "Drunk In Love" and Best Surround Sound Album for Beyonc?), Pharrell Williams (Best Pop Solo Performance for "Happy'', "Best Urban Contemporary Album for Girl and Best Music Video for "Girl") and Johny Cash's daughter Rosanne. Beyonc? now has 20 awards, coming in second right after Alison Krauss in the all-time achievement for a female artist, thus topping Aretha Franklin, who has 18 Grammys.
One of the most memorable performances of the evening was Sia's smash hit Chandellier. The notorious songwriter is known for the fact she is reluctant to show her face in public due to a medical condition, so young dancer Maddie Ziegler and actress Kristen Wiig did an impersonation of the song on stage.
The audience saw live Madonna, Kanye West, Rihanna and Sir Paul McCartney, Pharell and Hans Zimmer, and Ed Sheeran to name a few.
The ceremony also featured a recorded video of US President Barack Obama expressing his support for a campaign against domestic violence.
