Chairperson of Bulgaria's parliamentary Defence Committee Miho Mihov said on Sunday that the stationing of a NATO command centre in the country should not be interpreted as preparation for war.

Mihov also dismissed fears that this decision hinted of preparations by Russia for the waging of war on Bulgarian territory, airspace and naval space.

The MP explained in an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), that these misinterpretations were largely due to the limited knowledge of society on the organisational structures of NATO and the EU.

Mihov assured that both the Alliance and the Union base their defence policies on the capacities of each member states.

He said that each country has to ensure its armed forces are well-prepared for the likely eruption of war or crises of military character.

The lawmaker did not rule out the presence of threats to Bulgarian security, suggesting that a possible clash of civilisations and cultures could be in the making.

Last week, both Bulgaria's Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that a command centre of the Alliance is to be stationed in the country.

Mihov urged for more active participation of the parliamentary Defence Committee in the formulation of Bulgaria's participation in the multinational headquarters of NATO.

He revealed that there were intentions for conducting a joint sitting of the parliamentary Defence and Foreign Policy Committees upon the return of Defence Minister Nenchev from Brussels.

Miho Mihov is also a former Chief of Defense of the Bulgarian Armed Forces.
