At least thirteen people have died after shelling at a bus stop in Ukraine's Donetsk, local officials say.

Russian media outlets report of an "explosion" which also left tens of people injured, according to authorities in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic.

There are conflicting reports as to whether the incident occurred in a tram or a trolleybus.

The development comes hours after Kiev troops, which have been fighting militants in the Donbass region for months, left the region of Donetsk airport, where fierce battles had been taking place since May 2014.

Rebels have gained control over various regions in the Donbass, but Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko maintains they have always counted on Russian assistance.

On Wednesday he claimed there were up to 9000 Russian soldiers on Ukrainian soil.
