Snow and high winds wrought havoc in northern Bulgaria, closing roads and stranding traffic.

The Road Infrastructure Agency (API) warned that due to the “complicated meteorological situation” the third class road network in north western Bulgaria is closed and urged people not to travel in the regions Pleven, Vratsa, Montana, Vidin and Lovech, unless really necessary.

“If you don't want to sleep in your car, don't travel,” API head Lazar Lazarov said, quoted by the Focus agency.

API also closed traffic for trucks over 12 tonnes.

The mayor of Lovech Mayor Mincho Kazandzhiev declared a state of emergency in the area, due to the high winds, snow and snow drifts.

Early on Tuesday morning was reported that the situation was slowly returning back to normal, after the local authorities and snow cleaning companies worked through the night to clear the roads and tow the stuck vehicles.

Meanwhile, the meteorologists forecast another cold wave, with temperatures plummeting to -20 at nights in some regions.
