Bulgaria is a negative example in terms of economic development after its EU accession, Russia's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev believes.

"After entering the EU in 2007, in 6 years unemployment has increased from 6.9% to 11.8%. Foreign investment has shrunk nine times within the same period (from EUR 9.051 B to EUR 1.092 B). And are these countries anyhow worse than Ukraine, for instance [they are] comparable in terms of development and natural and climate conditions,"  Medvedev wrote in an article (titled Ukraine: Life under New Rules) for Russian daily Nezavisimaya Gazeta on Sunday.

Medvedev is referring to a few states in Eastern Europe that have become EU members over the past few years.

In his words, for Kiev "it is worth to have a look at the experience of its southwestern neighbors [i.e. Bulgaria and other countries from Southeast Europe] which entered into the EU after all. It should assess what has changed in their economies, if their GDP has subsequently increased, how the population's income has grown or dipped and what unemployment dynamics are. And most of all, if much foreign investment has flowed into them," Medvedev argues.

Russia's top officials have been lambasting at Bulgaria for a couple of weeks over its decision not to unblock construction of the South Stream gas pipeline, a stance which subsequently led the project to its demise.

@Eric Whyte : he gave hard figures, and you call it propaganda ? Oh man, propaganda is i.e. accusing Russia of shooting down a plane without any proof (and now we know for sure it was not Russia). EU is a total failure, if you can't see that, you are brainwashed, simply because the mark is too strong for many economies and countries are not allowed to choose their own policies. Look at Europe, the countries that are better off are out.

Russia is being punished right now economically, but once they will have bought all the gold in the world with China and Inda, bye bye petrodollar. Russia and China are certainly not saints, but at least they promote a multipolar world and don't agress countries. Again, those are facts, and since you don't want to acknowledge them, I can only conclude you have your opinion prefabricated by your ideology.

"Russia seems to be have plunged into economic and financial chaos"--- wishful thinking lets down sometimes.
"[Bulgaria] is guilty of the fall of the rouble"?---voil?'s a news...
"...or let the brutes have there way, like Turkey and Russia"---error in re, typical for the "true democrats". Today
the World has to let the REAL brutes, like USA & Puppits, "have their way" or, as it was nicely remarked by ChuckChuck:"3. Try to criticize the Democracy and you are automatically become EVIL
4. People who disagreed are involuntary 'baptized' by Tomahawk spirit and Holy Drone."
To the "true", though a bit bloody, "democracies" and to their devoted, though a bit blind, flock. Toast.

Bulgaria worse off after joining EU?
I appreciate that Medevdev's artice is nothing more than propaganda written for a Russian audience but seriously! What planet is he living on. You only need to use your eyes to see what nonsense his article is.
We all suffered during the recession but at least within the EU things seem to have stabilised. By contrast Russia seems to be have plunged into economic and financial chaos at least partly of its own making.
That said there is little doubt that Bulgaria will not flourish as it should until the corruption which is a hangover from the past is finally tackled

Democracy is a form of modern religion
1. Everybody knows it out there and nobody ever saw it (or can even prove the existence)
2. Everybody prays to Democracy and believes it is the best something EVER
3. Try to criticize the Democracy and you are automatically become EVIL
4. People who disagreed are involuntary 'baptized' by Tomahawk spirit and Holy Drone

Very simple reason why Bulgaria is still the poorest country in the EU.

No rule of law.

But then democracies are so overrated, better to run the countries like IS or the Taliban, or do it more subtle like China, or let the brutes have there way, like Turkey and Russia.

What a wonderful world!

Bulgaria knows not stopping in its mischievous behaviour-now it is guilty of the fall of the rouble.

Indeed, what is yet another shameful fact about the "progress" BG did as member of the EU. Ukraine who lost about the same percentage of its population during the Stalin industrialization drive, call this an act of genocide!

Medvedev hit the nail squarely on the head - BG people are much worse off under the EU diktat as an EU colony. The traitors who sell their country to the west for glass beads and fire watter are doing marginally better though.

The same thing happen to the orange Ukraine when western quislings of the orange Ukraine mafia by command of their US handlers ruined the Ukraine economy and turned Ukraine into a cheap sex tourism destination full of underage alcoholics and prostitutes. The current US-made brownshirt putsch in Kiev is not much different, besides the brutal onslaught of the E Ukraine people by the west supported nazi in Kiev Ukraine again is heading towards complete devastation of their economy.

In this sense Medvedev do not even needs to give BG as an example of a failed EU state - the Ukraine already knows what happen during the times of corrupt orange mafia rule who sell Ukraine to their western owners.
