The General Inspectorate has confirmed that the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad has issued thousands of certificates of Bulgarian origin without receiving any proof of their origin.
A previous inspection showed citizens of Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia had been granted Bulgarian IDs without providing a document to certify their Bulgarian origins.
The inspectorate said in a Wednesday statement to the media that procedures in hundreds of cases were not carried out in line with Bulgarian law.
It pointed out that a new administrative act should be established to regulate the procedure of issuing certificates for Bulgarian origin, stressing the current rules allow for loopholes and increase risk of corruption.
The scandal at the state agency led to the dismissal of its previous head, Yordan Yanev, by the interim government. Iva Yordanova took over for a few days but stepped down amid protests.
