Bulgaria’s Patriotic Front is ready to accept a mandate to form a government, the nationalist coalition’s co-chairman Krasimir Karakachanov said on Monday.

Following consultations with President Rosen Plevneliev, Karakachanov said that the Patriotic Front (PF) is ready to propose a functioning cabinet if the two biggest groups in the new parliament, centre-right GERB and the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), failed to do so.

Under Bulgaria’s constitution, if the two biggest parties in parliament fail to form a cabinet, the President will hand a mandate to a third political force represented in Parliament at his choice to try to forge a government. A total of eight parties and coalitions made it to Bulgaria’s 43rd National Assembly that started work on October 27.

Karakachanov said the PF haven’t seen yet a programme declaration for government from GERB and right-wing  Reformist Bloc (RB). The PF want to examine it to estimate the extent to which it will overlap with their own views on the future cabinet’s priorities before deciding what their own position will be.

GERB and RB have been widely tipped as the most likely partners in a future government coalition since October 5 early elections resulted in a highly fragmented Parliament.

The two parties said following their consultations on Sunday that a programme for government was almost ready and would be adopted Monday morning and handed to the Patriotic Front and Alternative for Bulgarian Revival (ABV) for approval.

The PF and left-wing ABV are the two groups in parliament which according to GERB could both support a GERB-RB minority coalition cabinet in Parliament without actually participating in it.

“We haven’t laid claims to any ministerial posts, for us the political participation of our leaders in government is of no importance,” Karakachanov said.

The Bulgarian Democratic Center (BDC), a parliamentary group led by Nikolay Barekov's Bulgaria without Censorship party, said earlier on Monday it is ready to send experts to aid a potential minority coalition of GERB and the RB.
