The German Federal Government has suggested that it considers a British exit from the EU as a possibility.

According to reports of Der Spiegel weekly magazine, citing estimates of the German Chancellery and Germany’s Foreign Ministry, the reasons behind the stance are the outburst of British Prime Minister David Cameron over the demand for an extra EU budget contribution of over EUR 2 billion voiced at the recent EU summit, and his proposal to introduce quotas on EU migrants.

German authorities find that the proposal contradicts key provisions of EU treaties concerning the free movement of workers.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned to withdraw her support for keeping the UK in the EU if Cameron continues to demand migration reform, thereby reaching a point of no return.

Merkel is believed to have presented Germany’s stance at a one-on-one meeting with the British Prime Minister at the latest EU summit.

His pledge to curb immigration from the EU has been interpreted as an attempt to win back voters who have diverted to the anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP) at the general election in May 2015.
