Russia is going to set up an air base in eastern Belarus and deploy Su-27 fighter jets there, Russian Air Force Commander-in-Chief Viktor Bondarev said on Wednesday.

The air base of the Russian and Belarusian Air Force will be established in Bobruysk in 2016, ITAR-TASS quoted Bondarev as saying during a visit to the facilities under construction.

The Su 27s will be stationed at a military airfield for which a reconstruction plan has  already been prepared.

Russia decided earlier this year to station 24 Su-27SM3 fighter jets to Baranovichi airfield in Belarus as part of united regional air defence system.

The Su-27 (NATO designation ‘Flanker’) is a twin-engine, multi-purpose long-range air superiority fighter, comparable to the US F-15. It is equipped to operate autonomously in combat over enemy territory and conduct interception of enemy aircraft, escort of deep-penetration strike aircraft and suppression of enemy airfields.
