Inflation Rises Slightly in Bulgaria, Falls Across the Eurozone
Inflation in Bulgaria recorded a slight uptick in May 2025
Tens of depositors and activists gathered in front of the Bulgarian National Bank's headquarters in Sofia to demand a swift recovery of Corporate Commercial Bank (KTB).
Protesters are concerned with a fresh bill submitted to the Council of Ministers which envisages reimbursing depositors who have their accounts blocked at KTB with bonds and not with cash, the latter option being also recommended by the EU Commission.
"The second serious concern comes from GERB's position after today [Monday]'s consultations," Daniel Bozhinov, who organized the latest demonstration, told the Bulgarian national Radio.
He explained that what worried depositors was GERB's idea to look for a new consultant and to have a new audit on KTB's books in order to carry out a completely new assessment.
"Not only are we not to receive our deposits soon, but we also see that the state... is working against us and against European law," Bozhinov added.
The rally was held with no incidents.
The EU Commission recently opened infringement proceedings due to the way Bulgaria's government tackled the crisis at KTB, after the country failed to allow clients access to their money.
October 15 is the deadline for Sofia to deliver a written response.
