Brazil’s president, Dilma Rousseff won most votes in the country's presidential election on Sunday, but failed to secure the overall majority needed to avoid a run-off.

The Workers Party incumbent received about 42% of the vote and faces a run-off against Aecio Neves of the Social Democratic party,who got 34%, according to reports of the BBC News.

Former environment minister Marina Silva, presidential candidate of the Brazilian Socialist Party, finished third with 21% of the votes.

Analysts predict a tight runoff on 26 October.

Voter turnout in Sunday’s elections was 80%, with Brazilians aged 18-70 subject to compulsory voting.

Voters also elected regional governors and members of Congress on Sunday.
