Bulgaria: GERB Leads Ahead of Snap Vote, Public Trust of Institutions Low-Survey

Centre-right GERB party has a comfortable lead ahead of other political formations 20 days ahead of early elections, a new survey showed on Tuesday.

According to the results of a nationwide survey conducted by Sofia-based Centre for Analyses and Marketing (CAM), GERB would win 36% of the vote if elections were held now.

The results are close to the findings of a survey conducted by Sofia-based think-tank Institute of Modern Politics (IMP) that were announced in early September.

Bulgaria voters go to the polls on October 5 in the second snap election in as many years.

The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) would win 22% support and mainly ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) would come third with 15%.

Other parties likely to pass the 4% threshold to enter the next Parliament if the vote was held today are the Reformist Bloc with 6% support, the nationalist Patriotic Front (4.8%) and Bulgaria Without Censorship-led coalition (4.1%), the survey showed.

If the six parties all make it to Parliament, GERB will have 98 of the 240 seats in the chamber, BSP – 60, DPS – 41, the Reformist Bloc - 6, the Patriotic Front – 13 and Bulgaria Without Censorship – 12, CAM said.

CAM has also asked respondents whether they trust Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov, central bank Governor Ivan Iskrov and caretaker Prime Minister Georgi Bliznashki.

According to the results of the survey, 68.9% of those polled don’t trust the chief prosecutor and a staggering 73.5% don’t trust the central bank chief.

Tsatsarov is trusted by 15.8% of those polled, while only 4.1% said they trust Ivan Iskrov. In addition, 68.2% said they don’t trust the central bank.

Just 17.3% said they trust the interim prime minister, while 67% replied they don’t trust him.
