In 2013, a total of 19,678 Bulgarians have changed their address to other countries, according to the revised National Program for Demographic Development implementation report.

Compared with 2012, there is an increase of 3,063 people (18.4%), and in comparison with 2011 – 10,161 people, or twofold increase.

However, the number of emigrants is considerably lower than at its peak in 2010, when they were 27,708 people.

A total of 18,570 Bulgarian and foreign citizens have come to live in the country, according to the report published for public debate showed.

Some 43.3% of them were in the age group 20-39 years and 27.0% were aged 40-59 years. In 2013, Bulgaria's National Employment Agency issued 706 work permits to third country nationals.

Among the EU countries, the highest number of foreigners was registered in Germany - 7.4 million people or 9% of the country's population. Three-quarters of all foreigners live in five European countries: Germany, Spain (5.6 million or 12% of the population), Italy and the United Kingdom (both 4.8 million or 8%) and France (3.9 million or 6%).
