Russia's President Vladimir Putin struck agreements on nuclear energy cooperation with Argentinian counterpart Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.

Under the deals, the Russian company Rosatom is to take part in the construction of Atucha NPP's Unit 3.

Relations between the two countries are "strategic" ones, Argentinian daily Clarin quoted Putin as saying.

During a joint statement of the two leaders, he added Moscow and Buenos Aires "share a common vision on world development and international affairs".

The Russian President described the country as "one of [Russia's] main partners" in Latin America.

Kirchner, for her part, declared Argentina's desire "to deepen relations with Russia" and described the documents signed in the field of nuclear energy as "creating the basis for a solid cooperation".

Putin met Kirchner in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires as part of a his trip to Latin America.

He is also due to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Brazil, as Merkel's spokesman was quoted as saying in a press conference.

Their "brief talks" might take place on the sidelines of the World Cup final on Sunday. 

Apart from Russia's role as the next country to host the FIFA World Cup in 2018, another reason for Putin to stay in Brazil is the forthcoming BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit in the city of Fortaleza, which is to be held after the last match of the tournament.
