9 Kilometers Long Car Queue at The Danube Bridge 2 Border Checkpoint
The car queue at The Danube Bridge 2 border checkpoint is approximately 9 kilometers long.
Nearly half a million vehicles have run along Danube Bridge 2 connecting Bulgaria's north-western city of Vidin to Romania's Calafat since its launch on June 14, 2013.
The heaviest traffic is recorded in July, August and September, Vladimir Andreev, CEO of the company operating the facility, told Bulgarian Telegraph Agency.
"Since its establishment a year ago, the joint Bulgarian-Romanian company Danube Bridge Vidin - Calafat has been operating successfully," Andreev said.
According to him, the facility can see a significant increase in traffic, however the infrastructure needs to be improved, namely the roads connecting Bulgaria's towns of Montana and Vidin.
On average, some 1200-1300 cars per day, and 42,000 vehicles monthly pass along Danube Bridge 2. According to the Romanian forecasts, a total of 8,400 vehicles and 30 trains daily can run along the bridge by 2030, Andreev explained.
European funding has been allocated for the rehabilitation of the section of the railway line Calafat - Craiova and the repair of the roads in the area, Dnevnik reports. Therefore, both the Bulgarian and the Romanian side hope that all the traffic from Western Europe to Sofia and Greece will pass along Danube Bridge 2.
Apart from the Romanian railcars, soon Bulgarian ones will run across the bridge, as well. So far the Vidin – Craiova line has been serviced by a Romanian trains only.
