The leader of the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), Sergey Stanishev, hinted at the likelihood of early parliamentary elections, at a press conference on Friday morning.

He, however, refused to set a specific date for the elections or for the eventual resignation of the government of Plamen Oresharski.

"The opposition's thesis about immediate elections is not appropriate. However, I do not think that they should be delayed in time, when there is no legitimacy and support for this government", Stanishev said.

According to him, the most feasible option is to let the government work until it can adopt a state budget for 2015.

The BSP leader also proposed constitutional changes and the introduction of mandatory voting, in order to mitigate the effects of election manipulations. Support for this will be sought from all parliamentary parties.

Stanishev admitted that Thursday's demand of Lyutvi Mestan, leader of the junior coalition partner Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) for early elections either by the end of this year, this time next year or in the autumn of 2015, caught him by surprise.
