Bulgarian MPs from DPS-Dogan Retain Immunity Amid Heated Parliamentary Debate

Liberal party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) has called on the Bulgarian government to resign in 4 months so that early elections can be held by end-2014.
"The analysis of the election results makes a full term in office of the Cabinet of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski impossible. This is not the path to stability," DPS leader Lyutvi Mestan declared at an extraordinary press conference in Parliament on Thursday.
Mestan insisted that the political process had to calm down.
He outlined three scenarios for a transition to political stability, including a term in office of the socialist-led government by October 2015 and the organization of 2-in-1 elections, elections scheduled for June 2015, or elections by end-2014, adding that DPS preferred the third option.
The leader of DPS said that the option of an immediate resignation of the current government had also been discussed but the proposal had been dismissed because it had been found that it would not lead to political stability.
Mestan made clear that the best option was for the current government to remain in power for four more months and resign by October at the latest, which had to be followed by a smooth transfer of power to a caretaker government and early elections in end-November or the first week of December.
He added that DPS was not seeking to impose its stance on anyone, adding that they were ready to engage in talks with anybody who had better ideas.
Mestan emphasized that the main weak point of the proposal of DPS was that the scenario envisaging early elections by end-2014 would make it impossible for the government to prepare the state budget for 2015.
Mestan, as cited by dnevnik.bg, announced that he had had talks with Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski on Thursday morning and that he had been impressed by his "maturity and responsibility."
The leader of the DPS party emphasized that holding onto power was not to be seen as an end in itself, adding that there were situations when a party's interests had to give way to public interest.
Mestan suggested that Bulgaria's national interest involved finding a stable form of government.
