The leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) Sergey Stanishev admitted that he was unsatisfied with the election results.
BSP comes second in the European elections according to the preliminary results, lagging around 10% behind the leading GERB party.
“The turnout was very low – around 35%. This is a warning sign for the whole political system, also to us. I would like to congratulate GERB as winners, but urge them to be cautious in their claims, as this percent does not reflect a wide representation”, Stanishev said.
“These elections were difficult. I want to thank everybody who worked for our campaign. Our campaign had a face. We heard the problems and expectations of the people. I understand very well the plight of the people, and our priorities will remain the same for the future. Our results are disappointing, but we will analyze this over the coming weeks. BSP will come back stronger and more united as a result”, the Socialist leader added.
Stanishev, who is also President of the European Socialist Party (PES) commented on the vote in Europe as a whole.
“In European terms, the reform of the left did not give the result we expected. Throughout the continent the far right has gained ground. They have won in the UK and France. This is a signal for the EU. It is a form of protest against the policies of the EU over the last 5 years, of the EPP’s policies of restriction. It shows the disenchantment of the people”, Stanishev commented.
