40% of Bulgarians took advantage of the preference vote option in the European Parliament elections by 2 pm on Sunday, according to exit poll data.

Around 22.7% of the eligible voters cast their ballots by 2 pm on Sunday and 40% of them used the preference voting option, according to exit poll data of polling agency Gallup International.

Dimitar Ganev from the Gallup International polling agency told the Bulgarian National Radio that the current voter turnout rate was the same as the previous European Parliament elections in 2009, adding that a total of 2.4-2.6 million Bulgarian nationals were expected to vote.

Meanwhile, the Central Electoral Commission updated its estimate to a voter turnout rate of 19.05% by 1 pm.

The CEC informed that the highest voter turnout had been registered in Burgas, at 36.63%, followed by Razgrad with 22.71%, Shumen with 22.20% and Haskovo with 22.14%, while the lowest voter turnout had been registered in Ruse, at 13.38%.
