The Republic of Cyprus could be on the road to send its first ever MEP from the northern Turkish-occupied region.
The northern part of the island has been occupied by Turkey since 1974, while the country joined the EU in 2004.
Cyprus will send 6 deputies to the European Parliament in the upcoming elections. Two candidates of Turkish origin are registered in the list of the Socialist Party, while two more are in the Action Party. There is also an independent Turkish candidate, Euractiv reported.
Despite diplomatic tensions between the Greek and Turkish part of Cyprus, the whole territory is considered part of the EU, and the whole population is eligible to vote.
Local diplomats say that the election of a Turkish MEP would be a step forward to normalizing relations between the two sides.
Nonetheless, voter turnout is expected to be low, due to the banking crisis which led to an EU bailout program.
