The water level of the Danube River near Bulgaria's Lom rose by 54 centimeters over the past 24 hours to 824 centimeters, causing the lowest sections of the port to get flooded.

Work continues only in the high berths of the port complex, while the activities at the other ones have been stopped and power supply has been cut, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio.

The local authorities have ordered for temporary dykes to be built.

The city of Lom will be one of the first places to be flooded if the water level rises further, exceeding 940 centimeters.

Over the past two days, the water level rose by 167 centimeters.

At the Danube city of Vidin, the water level has remained unchanged since 8 pm on Saturday, at 829 centimeters, and there is no flood risk there.

The heavy rains of the past few days in the western Balkans, especially in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, caused the water level of the Bulgarian section of the Danube River to keep rising.

The floods in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina resulted in a death toll of around 30 in three days and caused over 16 000 people to be evacuated from their homes.
