Happy Europe Day and Happy Victory Day! Before we jump at each other arguing what May 9th symbolizes, it may be more appropriate to reflect on where the continent stands today.
Regardless of which event one celebrates – the capitulation of Nazi Germany in 1945 or the signing of the Schuman Declaration in 1950, we must realize they both symbolize the same idea. The idea of a free Europe, where citizens can live in dignity and prosperity.
In times when Europe is faced with one of its deepest crises (socially, politically, and economically) since WW II, any parades or jubilant festivities project a sense of hypocrisy. A sense of obliviousness to the new Iron Curtain that is being drawn in Ukraine. A spit in the face of those nearly 50% unemployed youths across southern Europe.
Because come tomorrow, the "diplomatic efforts" to resolve the violence in Ukraine will return to the usual blame game while mothers bury their children. The economic "solidarity" in the EU will keep focusing on some abstract numerical targets which mean very little to the people on the bottom of the social ladder.
So rejoice Europeans...if this is what you think they died for!
