Bulgarian Village Became Second Home for Syrian Refugee Family
A Syrian refugee family has found comfort and acceptance in the southern Bulgarian village of Krushevo.
Jeilan and her 18-year old son and 14-year old daughter escaped the horror of Syria's civil war 7 months ago. The mother is still mourning the loss of her 8-month old baby, whose life could have been saved if there had been adequate medical treatment.
The family passes the long journey through Turkey, to reach the southern Rhodope Mountains village of Krushevo. First they are sheltered by a British family. Later on, the municipality grants them asylum in the building of the old school. The conditions are rather miserable, but the family is grateful for what they have been given, they tell the reporters from bTV.
Jeilan has even found work as a seamstress in the local clothing industry. Of course, the money is barely sufficient to support her two children, but the villagers often help with small contributions to the family.
"They are good people. They treat us well and they are very polite. We need more people in the village, so we would like them to stay", a local woman says.
The story of Krushevo is in stark contrast with what happened in another Bulgarian village several days ago. The inhabitants of Rozovo took to the streets and forced the expulsion of 17 legally residing Syrian refugees, who had not done them any harm. Their simple answer was that they feared crimes.
On Tuesday, the international organization Human Rights Watch released a critical report on Bulgaria, in which it revealed that the authorities were pushing back asylum seekers from the border with Turkey and often using violent methods to contain their entrance.
