Bulgaria's Parliament is to elect at a regular sitting on Wednesday a Chair of the National Audit Office.

MPs from the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the liberal party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) have nominated Lidiya Rumenova, former member of the National Audit Office.

Within 14 days from the election, the Chair of the National Audit Office is to submit to Parliament nominees for 8 more members of the managing body of the National Audit Office.

Center-right party GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) has not proposed a candidate for the pot and will most probably not take part in Wednesday's vote.

The need to elect a new Chair of the National Audit Office arose after the conclusive adoption of a set of changes to the National Audit Office Act.

Under the amendments, the managing body of the National Audit Office consists of 9 people, a Chair and 8 members, who are elected and dismissed by Parliament for a term in office of 7 years, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).

The Chair will not be eligible for re-election to a second term in office.

Valeri Dimitrov, former longtime Chair of Bulgaria's National Audit Office, who was removed from office after the adoption of the legal changes, has accused the government of seeking to oust the "inconvenient" managing team of the authority.

MPs from GERB have leveled similar accusations at the socialist-led coalition government.
