The United States and Japan have failed to reach a trade deal during the first day of President Barack Obama's visit to the Asian country.
The two sides were unable to come closer to the crucial Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact, initiated by Washington, The Japan Times revealed.
Japan's Economy Minister Akira Amari, who is leading the negotiations, said on Thursday that "too many issues remained unresolved" and further talks would be needed. However, neither country has come out with an official statement so far.
President Obama assured Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that the US remains a strong partner of Japan and urged him to take "bold steps" in moving the trade deal forward.
