Pieces of debris that "might turn out to be a wreckage" of the Malaysian MH370 flight were found at a beach in the west of Australia, according to local media reports.
Authorities are now to investigate whether the remains actually belonged to the Malaysian plane that went missing in March with 239 people on board while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, the newspaper West Australian has revealed.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is now studying an object picked up from the beach that appears to be sheet metal with rivets and with a "kind of rectangular" shape.
A representative for the bureau was however cautious and said one must wait until the piece is thoroughly examined.
Australian earlier vowed that the search for MH370 will continue regardless of the cost the operation could take.
Its Prime Minister Tony Abbot was quoted by the BBC as saying that the government would explore other options to look for the plane if the ongoing underwater operation was not successful.
Search for the plane has so far received assistance from more than twenty nations and tens of aircraft and ships.
For now, those involved in the operation say that MH370 ended its flight somewhere in the Southern Indian Ocean, but it still remains inclear why it was diverted off course short before flying over Vietnam.
