Bulgaria's Customs Agency to Undergo Thorough Probe
Bulgarian Customs Agency head Pavel Tonev has vowed a comprehensive inspection at the authority.
Tonev, who was appointed Director of the Customs Agency in November 2013, explained in an interview for Standard daily that the probe would include public procurement deals from 2009 on.
He added that all appointments made during the term in office of his predecessor, Vanyo Tanov, would also be examined.
Tonev informed that the Customs Agency was to buy three new X-ray scanning devices, thereby increasing the total number of such devices at Bulgarian border crossing points to 16.
He went on to say that cameras would be installed for the first time on the border with Macedonia.
He reminded that mobile units consisting of officers of the border police and the economic police authorities, as well as customs officers, had been functioning since May.
Tonev also boasted about a sharp, several-fold increase in the detection of smuggling of cigarettes, drugs and alcohol.
