Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva qualified for the WTA champs 1/4-finals after it upset 7th seed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia in straight sets in the first round of the WTA Championship (6:2, 7:5). This is the first success for the 27-year-old Bulgarian in the tournament of the first sixteen women tennis players in the world. I manage to achieve maximum concentration during the matches and this is what matters most, Magdalena commented her success. At the same time Hantuchova tried to excuse her defeat with fatigue. By qualifying for the WTA champs 1/4-finals Magi already secured USD 99,000. Later on Thursday world number one Serena Williams opened the defence of her WTA Championships trophy with a 6-2 6-2 demolition of Israel's Anna Smashnova on Thursday.
