A German liberal MEP declared he would run for a Greek party he founded to protest over austerity policies applied to Athens.
"I've always felt torn between the two... the German side of my heart is so ashamed," Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, who has Greek roots, was quoted as saying by the EUObserver.
He was formerly a Free Democratic Party politician (and the FDP were staunch supporters of austerity), but left the quit the political organization earlier this year, protesting over the ongoing spending cuts recommended to Athens by Berlin.
In January 2013, he launched a party called Greek European Citizens, with which he vowed to fight the EU-imposed policies in Greece. Chatzimarkakis then accused the EU, the ECB and the IMF, the so-called "Troika" of bailout lenders, of compromising "basic democratic rights and citizens' incomes" in the country, as Kathimerini quoted him as saying.
In Greece, as well as in some other parts of Europe, the German leadership and especially Chancellor Angela Merkel are often labelled as the architects of austerity policy applied to the Southern European country by international lenders.
Chatzimarkakis has been a MEP since 2004. He has not given indications his party would collaborate with other entities at the upcoming EU elections.
