Bulgarian Parliament's Budget and Finance Committee overturned Monday the veto imposed by President Rosen Plevneliev to amendments to the Audit Office Act.

The Ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party and its partners from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), as well as ultra-nationalist Ataka announced they would send a proposal that the veto be rejected in Parliament at the upcoming debates, Money.bg reported.

Only MPs from the center-right opposition GERB who are part of the committee announced they would support the veto.

DPS lawmaker Yordan Tsonev, who chairs the committee, said that the President and his counsellors were wrong when saying that the Audit Office legislation was not subjected to a debate in civil society.

GERB, the party which formerly ruled Bulgaria and which proposed Plevneliev as a presidential candidate back in 2011, claims that amendments to existing Audit Office legislation are only aimed at removing its top members, namely its chair Valeri Dimitrov.

Plevneliev has also cited a staff increase envisaged in the bill as a reason for his veto, as he believes changing it from three to nine will affect the auditing body's budget and this has not been taken into consideration in the proposed amendments.
