Oktay Enimehmedov, the young Bulgarian Turk, who attacked the honorary, lifetime Chairman of DPS Ahmed Dogan, was found guilty of death threat and acquitted of attempted murder.
Enimehmedov was sentenced to a 3.6 years imprisonment by Sofia City Court, Wednesday. The court stated that the penal servitude should exclude the time Enimehmedov spent in custody, which is 1 year, still the matter is to be referred to a higher authority.
At the previous court hearing, the deputy Director of the Institute for Psychology at the Interior Ministry, Rosen Yordanov claimed that Enimehmedov did not attempt murder but wanted to humiliate Ahmed Dogan by counting on the shot scaring him to the extent he would wet his pants in public.
"I, citizen of the Republic of Bulgaria, a free spirit, destined to be a slave, demonstrated courage and tried to protect the Bulgarian people, guided by my sense of duty," Enimehmedov said before the court, Wednesday.
"Former State Security associates should not be in control of the state and should not be leaders of Turks in Bulgaria. Hopefully, with my actions I have honored the memory of those who gave their lives for the nation," he added.
On January 19, 2013, police in Bulgaria's capital Sofia detained 25-year-old Enimehmedov after he pointed a gun at Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party founder Ahmed Dogan as he was delivering his resignation speech at a party conference.
Dogan has been seen in public only once since the January 19 incident. The former politician was removed as witness in the trial against Enimehmedov because of his ailing health.
