An increasing number of Bulgarians' phone calls and internet communications are of interest to Bulgaria's law enforcement agencies.
An analysis of the Sofia City Court shows that in 2013 the police and the State Agency for National Security (DANS) have filed 8345 requests for phone and internet traffic surveillance. It is hard to estimate how many people had been spied on, as, according to the court, each request contained tens of phone numbers and IP addresses.
Compared to 2011, when the requests were 6918, in 2013 they have grown significantly.
However, the court refusals have also increased. In 2011 12% of the requests were overruled, while in 2013 the percentage reached 14.3%.
By law the police and DANS have the right to collect information on people's internet traffic since 2010, with a court permit and only for the solving of serious crimes. The ISPs are required to collect and store traffic information for 12 months.
