Two thirds of crimes in Bulgaria remain unsolved, but there has been a 1.5% drop in household crimes during 2013.
This tendency discourages people from reporting crimes to the police, according to Svetoslav Lazarov, Chief Secretary of the Interior Ministry.
The Interior Ministry has prepared 15 measures against household crimes. The increased police presence in the countryside is only one of them, adds Lazarov.
Among the measures are redistribution of internal resources, surveillance, check points at countryside roads, updates to the interactive crime map and closer cooperation with the private security companies.
Another adequate measure, in Lazarov's opinion, would be the recruiting of volunteers among the former Interior Ministry employees who would be willing to help the police in combating household crime.
A large-scale police operation involving the special unit “Cobra” is underway in Sofia’s Lyulin district, as well as at several other locations across the capital, according to NOVA sources.
