Bulgarian Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski had addressed fears that the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party may face a rift.
“Today, more than ever, the unity of the political left is a question of national importance,” Oresharski said during BSP’s 48th congress on Saturday.
“Eight months ago, I took upon myself a huge responsibility to govern the country amid acute confrontations and social despair. Your support was crucial for the path we have taken and for our confidence that we can cope,” he told the party.
In January, former left-wing Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov announced his plans to form an alternative left-wing list for the upcoming European elections in May, triggering fears that BSP may split in two.
