Emergency situation has been declared in many municipalities in northeastern Bulgaria, as roads have been obstructed by snow drifts.

Some 46 people have had to be rescued from cars trapped on the road in Varna region, reports the Bulgarian National Radio.

Communications are a problem in the neighboring Dobrich, Silistra and Shumen regions, too.

Some checkpoints on the Bulgarian-Romanian border, such as Durankulak, are closed due to poor weather conditions.

Traffic alond Danube Bridge 1 between Ruse and Giurgiu is being let through slowly, with lines of cars waiting on both sides.
