Bulgarian Defense Minister Angel Naydenov revealed Monday that the country’s plans to build a fence on part of its border with Turkey have been hit by a serious delay.

It is unclear when the facility will be ready, Naydenov told reporters, explaining that the construction has been held back by procedural delays on behalf of the Interior Ministry.

The project was expected to be formally approved on December 4 – but this is yet to happen, Mediapool informs.

Bulgaria’s army began on October 24 the construction of a 33-km fence that will be used to restrict the number of refugees entering the country from Turkey.

The construction began in accordance to a decision made by Bulgarian Government at an extraordinary meeting that was held earlier in October.

On Monday, Naydenov dismissed the UN Refugee Agency’s recent criticism, saying that his country is “putting efforts” into creating conditions for the accommodation of refugees.

Last week, UNHCR urged states participating in the Dublin Regulation to temporarily suspend transfers of asylum-seekers back to Bulgaria, saying they risk inhuman or degrading treatment in the country.
