Active Life for Healthy Days: Walking

Nowadays, most people prefer to get on their car or take the bus rather than walk no matter what the distance is. Of course, there are many people who walk somewhere sometime, but making walking a regular activity and focusing on the intensity or distance covered can greatly increase fitness benefits.

Walking improves the condition of heart and lungs, and works the muscles of the lower body. There are many opportunities to walk. The whole countryside is covered with a network of footpaths and bridleways. All have their own rewards in the form of spectacular beauty, picturesque scenery, peace and tranquillity.

The faster a person walks the more energy they expend. Continuously increasing walking pace will lead to a point where walking is such hard work that it is easier to break in to a run. Walking at that speed will burn more calories than running at the same speed.

You can start by walking to the local shop, walking the children to school and back. When you need to catch the bus walk to the next bus stop along. If you can, forget the bus or tube and walk instead of taking public transport. Walk in the park at lunch time. Take a longer walk one day at the weekend, or whenever you have your day off work.
