The first snow fell in Bulgaria overnight Monday into Tuesday and brought more serious cold.

Code orange for dangerous snowdrifts is declared for five regions - Targovishte, Razgrad, Shumen, Dobrich and Silistra.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) has also placed 11 regions under a more moderate code yellow for potentially dangerous weather - Kyustendil, Pernik, Sofia and Sofia region, Montana, Vratsa, Lovech, Pleven, Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo and Ruse.

In the capital Sofia, a 5-centimeters snow cover accumulated overnight. Snow removal has started at 2 am and all equipment is mobilized, the City Hall informs.

Sofia has set aside BG 19 M for winter cleaning. Snow removal companies can provide 193 snowplows.

The public transportation in the capital is running without significant delays.

Regional road administrations and snow removal companies operate on 24-hour shifts to maintain the national road network.

The "Road Infrastructure" Agency warns drivers they need to use winter tires and exercise extreme caution.

Snow is to persist into Wednesday, but will be the heaviest in northeastern Bulgaria, while the precipitations will gradually subside in the western parts of the country.
